Networking Strategies for Self-Published Authors: Insights from CEO and Author Rachelle Van Ryssen

A Note from Rachelle

As a self-published author, I’ve learned that writing the book is only the beginning of the journey. The real adventure starts when you step out into the world and share your work with others. Networking has been one of the most valuable tools in my journey as an author and as the CEO of Sisters Ignited Media and Publishing Inc. Today, I want to share some practical, heartfelt strategies that have worked for me—and can work for you too.

1. Build Relationships with Readers

For me, connecting with readers has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey. Social media is a powerful way to interact directly with your audience. Platforms like Instagram and Facebook are not just for promotion but for building relationships. I love sharing behind-the-scenes stories from my writing process, snippets of inspiration, and even challenges I’ve faced while working on my books.

Another tip? Start a blog or a newsletter. This personal connection with readers builds trust and loyalty. When readers feel like they know the person behind the words, they’re more likely to champion your book.

2. Collaborate with Fellow Authors

Some of my most enriching experiences have come from working with other authors. Whether it’s guest blogging, hosting interviews, or even sharing book recommendations, collaboration can open doors to new audiences. I’ve partnered with other authors for live events and virtual discussions, and it’s amazing how much we learn from each other.

3. Engage with Bookstores and Libraries

There’s something magical about walking into a local bookstore and seeing your book on the shelf. Many independent bookstores are open to stocking books by self-published authors, especially if you’re willing to host a signing or reading event. Libraries, too, are a wonderful resource. I’ve held workshops and author talks at libraries, which not only introduced my work to new readers but also allowed me to give back to the community.

4. Attend Industry Events

Book fairs and literary festivals are excellent opportunities to meet readers, publishers, and other authors. I’ve attended local events, not just to promote my books but to learn and connect. Writing groups and networking conferences designed for self-published authors are also a treasure trove of inspiration and knowledge.

5. Leverage Online Events and Webinars

The digital space is an incredible place for connection. I’ve hosted virtual book launches on Facebook Live and even participated in online panels discussing themes from my books. These events make it easy for people to join from anywhere and give you a platform to showcase your passion and personality.

6. Partner with Influencers and Bloggers

Book bloggers and influencers on platforms like Instagram and TikTok have been game-changers in reaching a wider audience. I’ve reached out to bloggers in my niche, offering free copies in exchange for honest reviews. It’s also been rewarding to appear on podcasts and YouTube channels, sharing not just about my books but also my personal journey and faith.

7. Develop a Professional Online Presence

Your author website is your digital home. It’s where readers can learn about you, your books, and your journey. I’ve also found it valuable to maintain profiles on Amazon Author Central, Goodreads, and LinkedIn. These platforms make it easy for readers and industry professionals to discover you.

8. Build Relationships with Media

Sharing your story through local media outlets is an effective way to gain visibility. I’ve worked with newspapers, radio shows, and even TV interviews to talk about my books and the inspiration behind them. Sending out press releases about milestones, such as book launches or awards, has also helped amplify my reach.

9. Offer Value to Your Network

One of my favorite things to do is to support others. Whether it’s promoting a fellow author’s book, sharing writing tips, or organizing a workshop, offering value builds genuine relationships. Reciprocity is key—the more you give, the more you receive in return.

10. Stay Authentic

Above all, be yourself. Readers and collaborators are drawn to authenticity. Share your story, your struggles, and your triumphs. For me, being open about my journey with Multiple Sclerosis, surviving cancer, and finding hope in life’s storms has not only helped me connect with others but also inspired them to find beauty in their own challenges.

Networking isn’t just about selling books; it’s about creating connections that uplift and inspire. As a self-published author, you have a unique voice and story to share. Embrace the journey, and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. You never know whose life you might touch with your words.

Let’s keep inspiring each other,

Rachelle Van Ryssen CEO, Sisters Ignited Media and Publishing Inc. Author of Chasing Rainbows
